Sunny Saturdays

It seems like ages since we have been here. And it seems like ages since its been raining. All our love of the rain has been thoroughly exhausted by now! Sigh! And I thought the rain was romantic!
We were not so glum two weeks back. In fact, we were ecstatic to see the rain as we taxied our trolleys out of the Dibrugarh airport. On the way to Bobby’s place, four bright pair of eyes looked longingly at the lush green countryside outside. The rain drops trickled down the window panes enveloping the outside world in a halo of mist. The blazing, scorching Delhi days were over and boy! Were we not relieved! Childhood memories of jumping over puddles, making lop-sided paper-boats, watching my brothers play football in the rain while I sat daintily on the veranda steps (I was not ‘allowed’ to join!). But my favourite memory of the rain was the day my school had remained close due to heavy showers and Abba made me write an essay aptly titled ‘’A rainy day’’ while I sat perched on his knee and listened to his favourite memories of the rain. All little girls idolized their fathers. I was no exception.
But that was two weeks ago. Now we really need some sunshine to dry our musty towels and dripping clothes. Not to say anything about our field visit to Romai tea estate when our car almost skidded off the slippery road. We abandoned it in that treacherous state and trudged our way to safety through oodles of slush.
Its Saturday today.  Most importantly, the weekend has arrived.  For a week filled with reports to be read and conclusions to be drawn, Saturadys are no less than manna from heaven! Voila! And when I open my sleepy sleepy eyes, what do I see? The sun streaming in golden hues flooding the house with its warm radiance. No wonder all ancient civilizations worshipped the sun. Suraj devta ki jai ho! And gosh!Whats that! Rachel, Sarika and Ellen tucking into some yummy looking ‘lusi’ and ‘aloor dom’. Life indeed is a gift! We draw a quick POA (plan of action) for the day; some shopping (shopping is a must have on our list!) and watching Rajneeti at the local cinema hall ‘Ranghar’ ( the last time I saw a movie poster stuck there and had craved to go in was light years ago – DDLG to be precise) and a hearty lunch at the food court in Junction Mall ( food by mutual consent is our first priority!) So we all showered and dressed ; putting in little extra touches, Sarika straightened out her curls, Rachel wore some lovely beads, I applied my loreal eastern diva eye-shadow ( there's something about smoky eyes that gets me!) and Ellen…ummm….she was the usual good old Ellen. In no time, we were packed tight on the backside of Bobby’s car, expectant, happy, carefree….

One Sunday Evening.

It was an almost perfect Sunday evening. Dinner with Dadba had to be more than ‘purrfect’ in fact. Along the way, I was as always chattering my heart away and my brother had a half amused ,half thoughtful expression; his standard one! We stopped at the customary Mc Dy’s wala corner at Kamla Nagar. On a whim, my Marxist brother felt a desire for a capitalist cup of coffee. So be it!
The whole place was chock-a-bloc; it was a Sunday after all! There were mostly families today, I noticed. Pampered kids with their parents, contently licking ice-cream. A secure universe.
In the midst of my discussion with Dadba on ‘Detha and the oral history of Rajasthan’, I saw a little boy selling balloons to passersby. I had seen him before and like many others brushed him aside with a ‘Nahi chahiye bhaiya’. However, I had never really noticed how incredibly adorable he looked; even in his tattered shorts and dirt-stained face. Ok perhaps! I need to get married! He was wearing a faded red sweater and his face peeped amidst red, green and yellow balloons.
There were couples hand in hand, groups of friends out on a weekend who passed him by. He diligently prodded after everybody ‘Didi,Ek balloon le lo! Bhaiya, ek balloon le lo’ he pleaded. I guess everyone was caught up in their own private worlds to notice much. Suddenly, I saw his face clouding over with tears. He just let them flow. My mask of insularity didn’t help now. I had to go. I walked over to him and asked him ‘ Kya hua beta?’. He just sniffed ‘Didi ek balloon le lo!’ Oh! What wretched luck! All I had that day was a paltry ten bucks, after all why carry money when Dadba was there! I thrust it into his hands and said’ Main bohot badi hoon na, balloons se nahi khel sakti!’ It was a lame joke but he smiled. My heart soared.
I went right back and continued to talk with Dadba. Perhaps the conversation turned a little cynical. Why were there so many destitute children? Which NGO’s would help out? We finished our coffee in contemplation and left. While we left Mc Dy’s, I saw a youngster, dressed in the customary branded sneakers and a rugged jeans munching away on his burger with the little guy. Both were animatedly talking. That’s when I realized…a little sharing goes a long way…. :)

ETERNAL MOMENTS...my jaane tu ya jaane na story...:) DISCLAIMER: Not inspired from real life...Any coincidences are truly incidental!!!

A still winter morning; foggy, cold and dull. Naira tugged her blanket closer evading the first morning rays. But her alarm irretrievably went off. She opened her eyes for a split-second and checked the time- it was 5.30 am. In another half an hour the train would reach Bangalore Central. And then what? Will Rahil be on time? He’s never up this early, anxiously thought Naira.

Delhi, CafĂ© Coffee Day, CP inner circle, Block A: 5.50 pm. Naira surveyed the stranger sitting opposite her. He was a rather haggard looking fellow but with large, intelligent eyes. He had come straight from the hospital, his stethoscope lodging out of his jacket. He handed it over to Naira who stuffed it into her ample college bag. This was something of a tete-a-tete. Or in simpler terms- a date! This was the first of a series of dates; all terminating with coffee and a good conversation. Naira found Zaid affable, down-to-earth, intelligent…in other words, a perfect concoction for marriage. And since Zaid was rather swept away by her, she too gave it a modest thought. By his own admission ‘she had the most beautiful hair he had set his eyes on and of course the warmest smile in the whole, wide world’. It didn’t hurt either that academically she was his equal.

So Naira Hassan, age 24, was in grave danger. The danger of being persuaded. This was in fact, the sole topic of discussion among her friends. Everyone consented that being persuaded wasn’t such a bad thing as that...Especially at 24, when you are on the verge of being presented ‘eligible’ ‘settled’ young men by your parents.

Rahil was there…putting an end to all her doubts. Sylvia spotted him first…’Thank God’ thought Naira. How on earth would we have managed! He brought them to his home…a well-kept flat at Indiranagar. Naira noticed there were fresh flowers in the vases.’ Thoughtful as ever’ thought she. Rahil…her friend, philosopher and guide…the audience to all her stories…the keeper of all her secrets. It felt good to see him after a while. Since he had started working at Google, time was always a constraint. Sylvia was chattering away with him. She was declaring how she had in true Scorpio style managed to drag Naira away from Delhi. Naira smiled...’two scorpians ganging up against her!’Yeah…it was a good time…a time to share stories…to tell him about Zaid. She was sure his eyes would light up. They always did when he was happy.
India Coffee House, MG Road, Bangalore. It was Sylvia who spilled the beans about Zaid. Naira was almost crimson with embarrassment. She couldn’t even look up at their faces but she knew he would be happy for her…maybe a tad sad too…after all, marriages change equations. They would still be friends of course but something they both knew would change, forever perhaps.

They decided they would not brood over it…but sing their blues away. So they made merry…went to visit Mysore…Sylvia and Naira shopped for chappals at MG road…stuffed momos at a hidden eat away discovered by Sylvia…Rahil and Naira went bowling too, something she would never have done in Delhi. After all, Delhi had its plays and festivals all the year round.

That night was a breezy one. Naira loved the white-washed terrace surrounded by old gulmohar trees. She went up to the terrace to breathe in the night-air, something she loved doing. She didn’t even notice when Rahil came and stood next to her…he was gazing into the distance. She thought it better to leave him alone undisturbed. She was just about to go downstairs when Rahil held her back. His arms enclosed around her…and held her close. Naira felt her pulse throbbing…what did this gesture mean? Before she could think of anything, Rahil kissed her softly…a caress…a mere brush. Naira no longer knew what she was doing…she only knew it was impossible to break away…

Naira’s stay at Bangalore after this incident was a torturous one. She was supposed to be getting married to Zaid. Instead memories flooded her mind…her first movie at Delhi, Salaam-Namaste with Rahil…all their never-ending conversations…their school-time gossip…his always holding her hand re-assuringly…his going away and the way it ripped her apart…her silent tears.’ What the hell was wrong with her? ‘Thought Naira. She reasoned it out for herself. Maybe if I get back to Delhi…things will be better…not so confusing…not so nerve-racking.

Naira hoped Sylvia didn’t notice any change in her friend. She had become so absent-minded and often missed her friend’s crisp comments. The day of her departure, Rahil came to the airport to drop her. Sylvia was moving ahead to Chennai where her sister lived. Rahil and Naira had nothing to say to each other for the first time in their lives. Naira blinked back her tears…’Oh God! Why did you have to spoil everything…?

Barista, Kamla Nagar, North Campus, Delhi. Zaid was sipping his coffee…talking about his travails in the lab. He noticed her coffee had remained untouched.’ Hello dear! What on earth are you dreaming about…’? He lightly said. ‘I was just going to tell u what a real horror my supervisor is…just wait till you are allotted one…’his voice trailed off. But Naira had made her decision. She got up and held up her hand to him ‘I have to go Zaid…’ ‘‘I will call you later…’’But what happened?’ he questioned surprised at her abruptness. ‘I left something undone’ she smiled.

Naira rushed back to her friend Riya’s flat. It was New Year and they were supposed to be celebrating together. She reached and began hunting for her clothes strewn everywhere earlier in the day. It made her friend suspicious ‘’Hey! You just arrived, what’s happening?’’.

Bangalore Airport 10.40 am, January 2nd.Rahil was late this time. Naira leisurely sipped her coffee and looked about. The sun was streaming in…a sunny winter morning. Rahil walked in…an apologetic smile on his lips. Naira walked over and hugged him…Rahil held her for a while and looked into her eyes. He whispered…’you came?’I had to!’ whispered back Naira.

Writing...

A few years back, one sunny winter morning I had met Mr Keki N. Daruwalla. For the uninitiated, he is one of the most celebrated Indian poets writing in English. I was a saucy young girl then having read none of his work and thinking the world of mine! But fortunately enough through a Sahitya Akademy Competition i had the good fortune of being with him.It was at Jaipur on the auspices of the Rajasthan University.
I sized him up in a few glances,an old man wearing a checked winter suit, the kind that were in fashion thirty year's back but still continues to be the perennial favourite of my father's generation! And heartwarmingly an accompanying warm smile! The story i had entered was a love story, one of those boy-meets-girl,happy-ending sorts. But me being me,I had thought the world about it. By the way, it was titled '' Love on the Rajdhani Express'' because at that juncture of life,i was destined to travel by it considering flight rates weren't yet slashed.Anyway,Keki Sir asked me to read his ''Love across the salt desert'' because i apparently had a taste for love stories. In fact,I still think ''Love'' makes the world go round. But ahem!in very weird rotation circles!
This morning I had chanced upon Sir's review of one of his fellow-poets Kercy Katrak in the Literary Review of 'The Hindu'. I normally pass over remembrances but these few lines inevitably caught my attention...
'' To mimic the simplicity of stone
And find a metaphor for sky and star
To salvage coherence from the sea
I must seek the hard interior of my bone
But i am young and cannot find the words
That are my own...''
How hard! How impossibly difficult it is to write! To give shape to what u have concieved...To find words...To EXPRESS!
This is dedicated to all those who write inspite of its impossiblities!

6th December...

One cold December night
the stars lay calm and quiet
Darkness wraps up the world
lovingly into its fold
A chilly moon shines dimly
With clouds nestling around warmly
Stillness pervades the night
Beautifully surreal is the sight
But alas!your absence mars my picture
robbing it of its rosy tincture
So make haste my dear, delay no more!
For i am missing you to my heart's core!

Hello everyone!A hearty salaam...n hereby i end my hibernation with my new poem!:)N of course a very warm thanks to my inspiration....:)..friends,comrades n countrywomen enjoy!A special miss u to gitu too!will devote a better miss u poem fr u babe's!;)Muah!

Absence...

Wind-swept days
Stormy nights
Rain and thunder
Wet-soaked earth
The fragrance of spring
sweetens the breeze
The world bubbling with new life
dipped in soft green hues..
And mine...ebbing away every moment
All loveliness lies wasted
The rainbow turns ashen
The roses wither at my touch
My black dupatta
enfolds my empty shell..
My shroud has it become..
For i no longer exist
And how can i?
In your absence...

Come Away With Me.....

Come away with me in the night
Come away with me
And I will write you a song
Come away with me on a bus
Come away where they can't tempt us
With their lies
I want to walk with you
On a cloudy day
In fields where the yellow grass grows knee-high
So won't you try to come
Come away with me and we'll talk
On a mountain top
Come away with me
And I'll never stop loving you
And I want to wake up with the rain
Falling on a tin roof
While I'm safe there in your arms
So all I ask is for you
To come away with me in the night
Come away with me ....

A song i love....it calms me down n Norah Jones's is an absolute fav...in this era of blaring noises posing as music...a refreshing change.
